A text map is key pictures and symbols that sum up a text. Learning the model text orally, internalising the pattern of language, lies at the heart of the Talk for Writing approach. Children from nursery through to year 6 all follow this approach. We teach a range of strategies over the course of a few days, to help children retell a text using the map. Some key activities are: drawing their own maps, adding actions, miming it, performing it like a tennis match or passing it around a circle.
