At Asquith Primary School, we recognise that PSHE is at the heart of all learning and underpins every aspect of school life. Our curriculum is designed to support children in developing the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive as individuals, within relationships and as active members of society.
We aim to create a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment where children feel confident to express themselves, explore their emotions and develop a strong sense of self. Through engaging discussions, real-life contexts and meaningful experiences, pupils are supported to understand the world around them and their place within it.
Our PSHE curriculum promotes emotional literacy, resilience and wellbeing, ensuring children are equipped to manage challenges, build positive relationships and make informed decisions both now and in the future.
Deliver the National Curriculum and statutory guidance ensuring all pupils can:
Pupils are given opportunities to develop a rich emotional vocabulary, enabling them to express their thoughts, feelings and experiences clearly. Through discussion, role-play and reflection, children build confidence in communicating effectively and respectfully.
Through stories, real-life scenarios and discussion-based learning, pupils explore different perspectives, cultures and experiences. This helps develop empathy, curiosity and a deeper understanding of themselves and others.
We provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to apply their learning in real-life contexts. Through pupil voice groups such as the school council, Eco-group and charity work, children actively contribute to school life and develop a sense of responsibility and belonging.
We encourage pupils to develop aspirations for themselves and their futures. By exploring a range of life experiences, careers and role models, children are supported to believe in their potential and understand the possibilities available to them.
Our PSHE curriculum is underpinned by the Asquith values:
Implementation
PSHE is taught through a mixture of stand-alone lessons and key concepts woven into other areas of the curriculum and school life.
We use the scheme Talking Points to embed the statutory PSHE lessons through the use of picture books, with the aim to further promote and develop a love of reading. Talking points allows children to explore different concepts of relationships, families, rights and consent through picture books, providing pupils with a stimulus for discussion.
We use CWP resources to further explore RSE and teach explicit aspects of healthy relationships at an age-appropriate level.
Assessment for learning opportunities are provided to assess children’s knowledge prior to the teaching of a talking point and progression is evidenced through class discussion and group-based activities.
Our pastoral support team provide key support and strategies to the children who need it most.
We use the zones of regulation across the school to embed an understanding of emotions, how these can be controlled, and how these can affect children and their peers.
Our curriculum covers the following key areas:
Impact
We work to develop well rounded individuals who are tolerant, kind, courteous and ambitious and are ready for their next stage in later life. Effective PSHE work and our whole school ethos will promote positive behaviour across the school. In their next stage of education, they will be resilient to changes and have the skills to be able to deal with them.
