Intent
At Asquith Primary School we recognise that PSHE encompasses every aspect of school life. Our aims are to:
PSHE education is at the heart of everything we do at. A child leaving Asquith will have the tools that will help them regulate and navigate personal, social and emotional challenges that they may face throughout their life. They will understand how to live physically and emotionally healthy lifestyles. They will be able to form and sustain a wide range of positive relationships. They will contribute and function successfully in the wider world and have aspirations for themselves and those around them. We aim to develop the role of pupil voice through our school council, Eco-group and charity work as a school.
Implementation
PSHE is taught through a mixture of stand-alone lessons and key concepts woven into other areas of the curriculum and school life.
We use the scheme Talking Points to embed the statutory PSHE lessons through the use of picture books, with the aim to further promote and develop a love of reading. Talking points allows children to explore different concepts of relationships, families, rights and consent through picture books, providing pupils with a stimulus for discussion.
We use CWP resources to further explore RSE and teach explicit aspects of healthy relationships at an age-appropriate level.
Assessment for learning opportunities are provided to assess children’s knowledge prior to the teaching of a talking point and progression is evidenced through class discussion and group-based activities.
Our pastoral support team provide key support and strategies to the children who need it most.
We use the zones of regulation across the school to embed an understanding of emotions, how these can be controlled, and how these can affect children and their peers.
Our curriculum covers the following key areas:
Impact
We work to develop well rounded individuals who are tolerant, kind, courteous and ambitious and are ready for their next stage in later life. Effective PSHE work and our whole school ethos will promote positive behaviour across the school. In their next stage of education, they will be resilient to changes and have the skills to be able to deal with them.
