Day 4
Today started with some frantic packing of all our clothes. There are some very full bags but we’re not entirely sure the clothes in them all belong to the correct child (especially from the boys’ room). Please could you check through the bags and bring any items that are not yours back into school? This was followed by another hearty breakfast and loading up the coach.
The coach took us into Castleton. Whilst there, we explored the huge caves called ‘The Devil’s Bottom’. We learnt the history of the caves from how they were formed to how people lived in them and made ropes for miners to mine in the caves. Most of the work was done by children and Mr Barber even got to have a try.
We then explored deeper into the caves, although we only managed to go a quarter of a mile into the 16-mile cave network. A particular highlight was when the lights were turned out and we got to experience what the caves would have looked like for visitors in the Victorian times when the caves first became a tourist attraction. It was also interesting to learn that, regardless of the weather outside, the inside of the caves is a constant 7 degrees Celsius.
A short walk through a few fields and we found a beautiful spot to enjoy lunch in the sunshine. We then walked steadily back to the shops were many of the children bought ice creams and refreshing drinks. There was also an opportunity to explore the gift shop before we departed back to school.
