Intent
At Asquith Primary School and Nursery, we aim to ensure that all children experience a positive, enjoyable, and motivating physical education. We strive to foster a lifelong love of sport and physical activity, encouraging pupils to develop healthy, active lifestyles. Through the teaching of high-quality PE, children learn about the physical, mental, and social benefits of exercise, as well as gaining knowledge and understanding of fitness, health, and hygiene.
We follow the EYFS Statutory Framework and the National Curriculum along with the scheme Get Set 4 PE, to provide all children with a broad and varied physical education curriculum. Pupils take part in a wide range of games, gymnastics, and dance activities, allowing them to develop fundamental movement skills, coordination, and creativity. From Year 3, children participate in swimming lessons, delivered by specialist instructors at The Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre to ensure they can confidently swim 25 metres by the end of KS2.
We are committed to supporting all pupils to succeed and thrive in physical activity and competitive sport. All children are given opportunities to participate in a wide range of School Games events through the Mansfield Primary School Sport Partnership. These experiences, along with our PE curriculum, promote our Core School Values by creating real life situations where children practise positive behaviours that helps our pupils grow not only physically, but also socially, emotionally, and morally.
Through the teaching of PE, we embed our core school values, while also supporting our Whole School Curriculum Drivers.
Core School Values
Determination – Children develop resilience and perseverance through practising skills, overcoming challenges, and recognising that improvement comes from sustained effort and determination. Valuing progress alongside success supports the development of a growth mindset.
Honesty – encouraging pupils to follow rules, admit mistakes, and take responsibility for their actions, while focusing on personal bests and genuine effort.
Responsibility – managing their behaviour, safety, and effort, caring for equipment, and taking on leadership roles that build accountability.
Respect – follow rules, value others’ abilities and differences, and show good sportsmanship in both winning and losing.
Understanding – pupils learn the rules, roles, and strategies of activities while recognising individual differences, fostering empathy, inclusion, and an understanding that effort leads to improvement.
Cooperation - through team games and group challenges, pupils develop communication skills, support each other, and work collaboratively towards shared goals.
Whole School Curriculum Drivers.
We aim to promote Wonderful Words by developing pupils’ understanding of sport and game specific vocabulary, enabling them to talk confidently and clearly about their learning.
We aim to support Readers for Life by encouraging pupils to listen carefully, follow instructions, and use subject specific language to understand and apply new skills and strategies.
We aim to provide Opportunities by giving pupils a wide range of experiences to participate in and enjoy sporting activities and events, both within school and beyond the school environment.
We aim to encourage pupils to Dream Big by giving them the skills, confidence, and experiences needed to aim high in sport and physical activity.
Implementation
At Asquith Primary School, we follow the Get Set 4 PE scheme to deliver a high-quality, progressive physical education curriculum. All pupils receive a minimum of two hours of physical education each week. Lessons are taught by a qualified sports coach, working in collaboration with class teachers to develop staff subject knowledge and ensure consistent, effective teaching and learning. This approach supports the progressive development of key skills, ensures learning is securely embedded, and enables misconceptions to be identified and addressed promptly.
The inclusive and practical nature of the PE curriculum ensures that pupils with SEND and those with EAL have full access to learning. Lessons are adapted through changes to equipment, space, and tasks to meet individual needs and promote equal participation for all pupils.
In addition to curriculum PE, a range of after-school clubs is offered and led by teaching staff and sports coaches to further develop pupils’ skills and encourage lifelong participation in physical activity. As members of the Mansfield Primary School Sport Partnership, the school actively engages in a wide range of School Games events, providing pupils with opportunities to participate in competitive sport and represent the school.
Impact
At Asquith, we aim for pupils to leave primary school as independent individuals who take responsibility for their own health and fitness throughout their lives. Through high-quality physical education, pupils develop an understanding of the importance of physical activity, sport, and healthy lifestyles. Our PE curriculum is designed to motivate pupils to become confident, resilient, and disciplined learners who demonstrate fair play, teamwork, and positive sporting behaviour in both competitive and non-competitive contexts.
